People with lung problems aren't the only ones who struggle with mucus. Since we started providing Effervescent N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC for short) mostly for lung patients, we have had an increasing number of people looking for help with the mucus associated with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. When a professional ALS counselor first contacted us about getting NAC for ALS patients, we started researching internet information on any studies done specifically on ALS and NAC, and what we found out was what he already knew.

NAC is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, and may be the most thoroughly tested and documented supplement in the world. It has been used as a mucolytic (dissolves mucus) for well over 30 years, but being a precursor to glutathione (GSH) is possibly just as important to people with ALS. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant, which as you will see in the studies below, slows the oxidative stress that contributes to the progression of the disease.

Using guaifenesin ( Mucinex) and dextromethorphan, is only intended for short term (7 days) use, and has warnings not to combine with over 30 prescription drugs. It's meant for people with colds who need a little help getting over the congestion. It is not meant for serious, long term use. NAC, on the other hand, has been proven safe over decades of research for long term use.

But is all NAC the same? No.

After hours and hours of internet research, our founder learned about the value of NAC for lung patients, and knew he wanted to try it, but wanted to make sure he got top quality. Wouldn't you? Then, either by accident or providence, he stumbled across a Stanford University study of N-acetyl Cysteine that led to the perfect answer for him.

It said that N-acetyl cysteine destabilizes and degrades in the presence of air. The longer it's exposed, the weaker it gets. All those capsules and tablets sitting on the shelf at American health stores somewhere have air in the bottle, just oxidizing the quality away. Worse than that, this oxidation slowly turns it into 'di-NAC', which actually has the "opposite immunologic effect of the NAC!" Why does this fact go unmentioned?

The most probable reason is that the FDA does not regulate the production and packaging of nutriceutical products made in this country, so "neither the content nor purity of those NAC formulations can be reliably judged." The production methods may not include the necessary means to prevent the oxidation either during manufacture or product storage, since that would greatly increase the costs of production. That's why a hundred capsules are so inexpensive.

Maybe if you have tried N-acetyl cysteine before and didn't get the results you were
hoping for, this is why.

Our Quest for the Best!

Our founder was convinced that if he could find a higher quality form of N-acetyl cysteine it would work for him, and he was right. He finally found an effervescent N-acetyl cysteine, which was manufactured in Germany in a very strict environment of limited exposure to air, with individual fizzy tablets sealed in air tight foil. Drop one in a few ounces of water, and in moments, a tasty berry dose is ready to go. This is the perfect form for ALS patients who have trouble swallowing.

We've already done hundreds of hours of internet research and saved you a lot of time, learning about NAC and where to find the best available. In those hours, we found many medical studies specifically on ALS and NAC, a few of which you will see below.

Besides dissolving mucus, the fringe benefit of NAC's boosting the immune system can be very helpful if you're caring for someone with ALS, not only for them, but for you. A minor cold of yours might not be so minor for the patient.

Just A Few of the Medical Studies on NAC and ALS:

From the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health:
N-acetyl-L-cysteine improves survival and preserves motor performance in an animal model of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Neurology Service, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.
Increasing evidence implicates oxidative damage as a major mechanism in the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We examined the effect of preventative treatment with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), an agent that reduces free radical damage, in transgenic mice with a superoxide dismutase (SODI) mutation (G93A), used as an animal model of familial ALS. NAC was administered at 1% concentration in the drinking water from 4-5 weeks of age. The treatment caused a significantly prolonged survival and delayed onset of motor impairment in G93A mice treated with NAC compared to control mice. These results provide further evidence for the involvement of free radical damage in the G93A mice, and support the possibility that NAC, an over-the-counter antioxidant, could be explored in clinical trials for ALS.

N-Acetyl-l-cysteine protects SHSY5Y neuroblastoma cells from oxidative stress and cell cytotoxicity: effects on ß-amyloid secretion and tau phosphorylation

Redox changes within neurones are increasingly being implicated as an important causative agent in brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cells have developed a number of defensive mechanisms to maintain intracellular redox homeostasis, including the glutathione (GSH) system and antioxidant enzymes. Here we examine the effects of N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) on ß-amyloid (Aß) secretion and tau phosphorylation in SHSY5Y neuroblastoma cells after exposure to oxidative stress inducing/cytotoxic compounds (H2O2, UV light and toxic Aß peptides). Aß and tau protein are hallmark molecules in the pathology of AD while the stress factors are implicated in the aetiology of AD. The results show that H2O2, UV light, Aß1-42 and toxic Aß25-35, but not the inactive Aß35-25, produce a significant induction of oxidative stress and cell cytotoxicity. The effects are reversed when cells are pre-treated with 30mm NAC. Cells exposed to H2O2, UV light and Aß25-35, but not Aß35-25, secrete significantly higher amounts of Aß1-40 and Aß1-42 into the culture medium. NAC pre-treatment increased the release of Aß1-40 compared with controls and potentiated the release of both Aß1-40 and Aß1-42 in Aß25-35-treated cells. Tau phosphorylation was markedly reduced by H2O2 and UV light but increased by Aß25-35. NAC strongly lowered phospho-tau levels in the presence or absence of stress treatment.
A role of free radicals in the progression of ALS recently received support with the discovery of linkage of familial ALS (FALS) with mutations in the gene encoding CuZn SOD (SOD1)21. Levels of SOD1 are decreased in patients with FALS but are often norrnal in sporadic ALS. In a patient with FALS, FRESA analysis indicated an SOD1 activity of approximately 50% of the lower end of the normal range. The remaining FRESA profile was normal. NAC treatment has so far been unsuccessful in altering the progressive course of this patient's disease. In two patients with sporadic ALS, SOD1 activity was normal, but GSHpx and glutathione reductase activities were markedly decreased. In these patients NAC treatment may have modified the course of the disease as one patient (duration of treatment 12 months) has remained stable with an increase in grip strength. A second patient has only marginally progressed during 17 months of treatment with NAC. Recently, Louwerse et al.22 reported on a double-blind trial of NAC in 111 patients with ALS. Patients with limb onset but not bulbar onset of ALS had a 50% decrease in the one year mortality rate with NAC treatment.

For those who have trouble swallowing pills, the effervescent tablets are great!
Just drop one in some good water (not tap or distilled) or juice and adjust the amount of liquid to taste.

*Individually sealed tablets prevent moisture and air from destabilizing and degrading the NAC; a major problem for most other over the counter NAC products bottled in capsule or tablet form, which exposes it to air.
*Processed under strict environmental conditions, with extremely limited exposure to air.
Without this costly processing, many over the counter NAC supplements often have little or no active NAC in them, despite labeling to the contrary. No matter how cheap they are, you'd still be paying too much.
*Better And Quicker Absorption:
With conventional solid tablets or capsules, the compounds often dissolve slowly in the stomach, which frequently delays or reduces absorption. Effervescent tablets on the other hand dissolve quickly and easily in a glass of water, and the active ingredients are immediately absorbed, completely and uniformly, upon drinking.
*Gentle On Your Stomach: Capsules and tablets sit in your stomach for varying lengths of time, and can cause stomach lining irritation, where effervescent is already dissolved before swallowing.
*Problems Swallowing Pills? Effervescent is the perfect solution if you're one of the many who don't like or have trouble swallowing pills.
*Simple To Use, Exact Dosage: Effervescent tablets are quickly dissolved in a glass of water or fruit juice and a fizzy, tasty drink is ready to start working. With effervescent tablets, the dose is standardized and the liquid quantity is variable allowing for the great berry taste to be adjusted according to individual preferences.

"…this is one product that works as advertised. Consider me a customer for life!"
As a patient suffering from ALS, I am always willing to try new products and treatments to alleviate my symptoms. Unfortunately, I am usually disappointed and see little, if any, positive results from these various products. However, when a number of fellow patients with ALS (PALS) mentioned the benefits of NAC in an online forum, I decided to do some research. As it turns out, NAC comes in many different forms and potencies and so it all became a bit confusing. Because I have difficulty swallowing pills, I clicked on a link recommended by fellow PALS, which brought me to After reading the useful information provided on their website and seeing how compatible their dissolvable tablets were with my condition, I ordered a box.
After only two days of taking their NAC tablets I noticed a remarkable difference! The mucus and phlegm that had haunted me were gone. No more lying in bed at night trying to clear my throat. No more rattling in my chest. And, no more bottles of expectorant. The NAC I get from is high quality, not overpriced, arrives quickly, and most importantly...I am happy to report that this is one product that works as advertised. Consider me a customer for life!

"…my Dr. tells most of his patients to try this product and in my case he said it was imperative…"
Hey Savannah, it's Kim and Roger again......
Since upping the dosage from 2 to 4 wafers daily ( on my Dr.'s advice ) my nose has stopped running and my chest feels less heavy and the amount of mucus I am producing has lessened considerably . There also have been a lot of summertime colds going around, and I have not come down with one, so hopefully the NAC is warding off the offending bugs. I believe my Dr. tells most of his patients to try this product and in my case he said it was imperative that I use it. Thanks for your great customer service.

"...within 2 days, I was breathing much easier."
Ms Taylor - Suffice it to say that I would not be reordering this product if it did not work. I had a terrible cold that filled my chest with thick mucus that I simply could not cough up, no matter how much fluid I drank or how many nebulizer treatments I gave myself. This product must have caused my body to reabsorb the mucus, because within 2 days, I was breathing much easier. Thanks.

"... how fast I started to feel better...I will never be without it."
Hi Savannah:
I'm so sorry it has taken me this long to get back with you, but I've been feeling so much better I'm afraid to talk about it. By the way Thank You so much for all of the information about NAC it cleared up a lot of questions I had & at this point all I can say is I will never be without it - it's just hard to believe I've gone all these years feeling so bad & this in a very short amount has made feel this good.
I have had upper respiratory problems all of my life, really since I was an infant I've battled one upper respiratory infection after another. I have taken antibiotics literally all of my life - I can't remember a year that I wasn't on an antibiotic for bronchitis or sinusitis or strep throat - it was never ending. I had sinus surgery in April & appeared to be getting better & then I got bronchitis I saw my pulmonary Dr. & he gave me some more antibiotics & many inhalers & a breathing machine. I thought it just a matter of time that this would take my life.
One night I found this web site about lung diseases & bronchitis & there was an article about NAC - everything I read sounded like a good idea & at this point I thought what do I have to lose, so I ordered it & it was the best thing I have ever done. I cant begin to tell you how fast I started to feel better. I had this horrible cough, wheezing short of breath & no energy. Within a week I started to feel so much better & it just continued. I was so skeptical - I had tried so many things throughout the years to no avail but this was amazing. It has truly changed my life.
Anyone with upper respiratory problems please give NAC a try, if you don't understand how it works Savannah is there to answer any questions you may have.
I'm so happy I found this product it has given me a new out look on life. I feel so much better & I attribute it to NAC.
Thanks again Savannah

What should you expect? Most people report noticeable mucus reduction in as little as 2-4 days with continuing improvement. Measurable elevation of glutathione in your blood begins in 1 to 2 hours. The antioxidant protection from oxidative stress begins immediately. This is a high quality, superior product from Germany, made with a pharmaceutical precision. Dosage and usage information in English will be included with your order.

While drugs may offer fast relief, it's temporary and probably harmful for long term use.
Taking Effervescent NAC daily builds and maintains improvement naturally, as well as provides all the fringe benefits that maximize your health potential.
